Fall Arts Guide 2012

As the temperatures drop, there’s no reason to stay bundled up indoors this fall. We’ve picked out some of the interesting and entertaining events going on in Lawrence and the area to help you plot how to spend the season. From midget wrestling to “Beauty and the Beast,” a picture tour of downtown to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” there’s something for everyone.

Sara Paretsky will be the guest of honor at a Lawrence Public Library Foundation event on Friday.

Nov. 9: An Evening with Sara Paretsky

Best-selling author and Lawrence native Sara Paretsky will be the guest of honor at an upcoming Lawrence Public Library Foundation event.

The event, to honor Paretsky with the Community Enrichment Award, will feature an on-stage interview with the author, preceded by a social hour with desserts and a wine and basket auction.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at Liberty Hall, 644 Mass. Tickets are $35, with table sponsorships available (part of ticket price is tax deductible). To purchase, go online to lawrencepubliclibraryfoundation.org. For more information, call the foundation at 843-3833, extension 131.

Paretsky is the author of 18 books, including her bestselling V.I. Warshawski novels.

“An Evening with Sarah Vowell” is planned for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

Oct. 10: Sarah Vowell

An author who’s been on “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” — and who’s also the voice of Violet Parr in the Pixar film “The Incredibles” — will be on stage in Lawrence next month.

“An Evening with Sarah Vowell” is planned for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Boulevard. The free event is part of the Hall Center for the Humanities 2012-13 Humanities Lecture Series.

Vowell is the best-selling author of six books on American history and culture, her most recent being “Unfamiliar Fishes,” the history of Hawaii and the state’s annexation. According to an announcement from Kansas University, “By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers accounts of everything from presidents and their assassins to colonial religious fanatics, as well as the odd cranky cartographer.”

Vowell was a contributing editor for Public Radio International’s “This American Life” from 1996 to 2008 and has written essays and columns for several newspapers and magazines.

Oct. 27: Lawrence ArtWalk

The Lawrence ArtWalk, coming in late October, offers members of the public a unique peek inside participating artists’ private studios or homes.

The free annual event, now in its 18th year, is expected to include more than 40 Douglas County artists exhibiting work individually or as part of two artist groups. Participants will meet artists in their creative work environments, see demonstrations of their crafts and have the opportunity to purchase original art.

Organizers promise art from funky to exquisite, in a wide variety of media including ceramics, jewelry, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture.

ArtWalk will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 27 and from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 28. Several artists will exhibit work for extended hours or hold receptions Oct. 26 during the city’s monthly Final Fridays event.

Lecompton glassblower Ben Kappen, recipient of this year’s Lawrence ArtWalk Featured Artist Award, will give a free glassblowing demonstration from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Arts Center.
