Firefighters extinguish early-morning house fire

Firefighters responded just before 6 a.m. Monday to a house fire at 312 Bowstring Drive, which is just north of the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Princeton Boulevard.

Flames were coming from the second floor of the wood-framed house when crews arrived, said Eve Tolefree, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical division chief.

All occupants and one cat were safely evacuated, but “an additional cat succumbed from the conditions of the incident,” Tolefree said.

The Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross was contacted to assist with the displaced occupants.

Tolefree said the fire is still under investigation and no damage estimate was available.
