25 years ago: Morning storm brings down trees, cuts power to residents

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 6, 1987:

Nature’s fireworks had made an appearance in Lawrence the previous morning when a thunderstorm had pounded the area, bringing down trees and cutting off power to thousands of local customers. The storm, packing heavy rains and winds of up to 73 mph, had moved into the area between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Weather observers reported rainfall totals of 1.21 inches in town and nearly that much in outlying areas. About 2,500 electric customers had lost power in the morning, with an additional 500 affected by later outages. Electricity had been restored to all customers by 1 a.m. today.
