25 years ago: DLA considers changing official mall policy

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 11, 1987:

  • The Downtown Lawrence Association was meeting this week behind closed doors to decide whether to change their official policy on the proposed downtown mall. Since 1984, the group had officially been in support of the planned development on the 600 block of downtown. However, in a vote taken on Jan. 28, many retail members of the DLA had indicated that the mall should be moved to the 700-800 block east of Massachusetts.
  • The yearly Academy Award nominations had just been announced. “Platoon,” “A Room With a View,” “Children of a Lesser God,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” and “The Mission” had been nominated for Best Picture of 1986. Paul Newman had been given a seventh nod for best actor for his role in “The Color of Money.”
