40 years ago: Assaulted woman fights back

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 9, 1972:

  • Police reported today an occurrence from a recent night in the 1100 block of Tennessee. Just before midnight, a woman had been walking alone near her residence when she had heard someone running behind her. She had been hit on the back of the head and knocked to the ground. “When the assailant bent over her, she swung her purse at him. The purse contained a bottle of bubble bath estimated to weight two pounds, and the man screamed obscenities and fled.” The victim had not been seriously injured.
  • Figures provided today by David Miller, Kansas University student body president, showed that bus service underwritten by the Student Senate during the spring semester so far had cost $1,853,58. Use of the bus service had increased dramatically during the recent cold weather, with more than 16,000 fares during each of the past two weeks. Bus fare at that time was 25 cents.
  • Bleak skies, cold weather, and occasional snow were all in the forecast for the area for the next 24 hours. The low in Lawrence this morning was 4 degrees.
