100 years ago: Lawrence resident learns sad truth about father’s fate on Titanic

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1912:

  • “The story of the Titanic’s disaster brings general grief to the whole world, but to one man in Lawrence today it brought the greatest sorrow. That person was H. W. Webb, who received confirmation this morning that his father was among those who went down on the Titanic. The Webbs are manufacturers of fine linen towels and stand high among the linen importers of the United States. Mr. Webb was returning home on the Titanic. Naturally his son had hopes that his father might have been rescued but with the arrival of the Carpathia and the absolute verification of the list of survivors Mr. Webb had to face the fact that his father had perished.”
  • “Nearly a week has passed since the Titanic sank, much of her story still untold, and many days will pass before the world fully comprehends the significance of the disaster. The number of dead will probably never be exactly determined. The complete passenger list went down with the vessel…. Passengers who reached New York distraught and penniless are given ample time to recover from the shock by their experience and will start their life in the new world with ample funds and kindly advice of excellent counselors…. The Titanic’s fate has already resulted in prompt action by trans-Atlantic lines. Various lines agreed upon a new ‘Long’ Course, which dips far to the South of the Titanic’s course…. Bruce Ismay, discussing his departure from the Titanic, said: ‘I’ve searched my mind with deepest care…. My conscience is clear…. I took a chance of escape when it came to me, I did not seek it. Every woman and child had been cared for before I left the boat. And what is more, all the men within reach had been cared for before I took my turn. And why shouldn’t I take my turn? I was a passenger. It is true I am president of the company. But I didn’t consider myself any different from the rest of the passengers. I took no other man’s place.'”
