25 years ago: Workers escape train-truck collision
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 20, 1986:
No injuries were reported in the wake of a train-truck collision on the Santa Fe railroad tracks north of Lawrence. The head-on collision had occurred just after 5:30 p.m. northeast of the Santa Fe Industrial Park just outside the city limits. The train, consisting of three locomotives and a caboose, had been eastbound at about 50 mph when it had rounded a curve and struck a Santa Fe maintenance truck, pushing it more than a quarter-mile down the tracks before stopping. The truck had exploded and caught fire on impact, resulting in damages estimated at $20,000. Workers in the truck had been able to jump clear of the truck before the collision. Railway officials were investigating the accident.
