Lawrence police report: Speed, reckless driving contributed to fatality accident
Lawrence police officers investigating a crash that killed a 29-year-old Michigan man on Aug. 27 in North Lawrence believe speed and reckless driving contributed to the accident, according to a police report.
Tyler Yaroch, 29, of Midland, Mich., died when he was ejected from the 2000 Jeep he was driving west as it rolled and ejected him in Riverfront Park.
Tonganoxie police have said they believed an officer was involved in a pursuit at speeds faster than 100 mph with a vehicle matching the description of Yaroch’s Jeep on U.S. Highway 24-40 between Tonganoxie and Lawrence at 12:30 that morning, but a Tonganoxie officer stopped the chase near the Lawrence Municipal Airport. That’s a short distance from where Yaroch’s vehicle was found five hours later.
According to the Lawrence police report made public Monday, Yaroch was driving his Jeep west on North 1800 Road when the Jeep traveled up the levee, went airborne for several feet and eventually landed and flipped. Yaroch was ejected from the vehicle, and another driver in the area found his body at 6:15 a.m.
Toxicology results are pending. Coroner’s investigators have said in a preliminary report Yaroch tested positive for marijuana and amphetamine, but they are waiting on more extensive blood test results. According to an obituary, Yaroch was traveling to Colorado at the time.
