Lawrence Giveback program going mobile

The 12,000 people who regularly cash in on savings at 75 Lawrence merchants — all while generating donations for more than 100 charitable organizations in the area — are about to have a faster, easier and more responsive way to transact purchases.

Lawrence GiveBack, a loyalty program that has provided more than $140,000 in donations for organizations during the past 31 months, is adding a mobile platform that allows members to update and monitor their accounts using a personal 10-digit code:

A mobile phone number.

“We think this will take the program to a whole new level, because of the convenience factor,” said Constance Wolfe, founder and manager of Lawrence GiveBack, which is owned and operated by The World Company, which also owns the Journal-World. “It’s free, and it doesn’t cost the customer a dime.”

The loyalty program allows members to take advantage of cost savings, promotions and other special deals at participating merchants. The merchants, in turn, donate a percentage of such sales to members’ selected charities, ranging from American Music Academy and the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross to Willow Domestic Violence Center and the Watkins Community Museum of History.

All such transactions previously had to be conducted with use of a special membership card. But now, the majority of member merchants are equipped to allow customers to provide a mobile phone number instead.

Customers no longer will need to carry cards, remember to produce them at checkout or ask for updates on their account summaries. By going mobile, all such business would be tracked and updated automatically.

Customers can know exactly how many points they’ve accumulated through the program, which gives the customer a $10 gift card for every 200 points earned through purchases and other interactions with participating merchants. And customers can find out how much money their purchases have sent to their selected charities.

Merchants can arrange to send GiveBack members special deals regarding sales, promotions and other benefits.

“And the consumer has complete control over what they share and who they connect with,” said Travis Priest, president and CEO of Sundrop Mobile, an Orlando, Fla.-based company providing the mobile platform. “We’re just trying to facilitate that.”
