40 years ago: Local women successful in cleaning up Mass Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 3, 1971:

The changes of autumn were making themselves felt in the Lawrence area. Locally heavy thunderstorms had moved through, bringing 1.53 inches of rain and winds up to 25 miles per hour. Today was a fine day for cleaning up the storm damages, but a hard freeze was expected for tonight.

About 20 women had taken place in the “Mini-Cleanup” on the previous day. Armed with brooms, dustpans, and trash bags, they had moved down Massachusetts Street from Sixth to 11th, leaving cleanliness in their wake. The women had also cleaned Ninth Street for several blocks on each side of Mass Street. “It looks tremendous,” said chair Mrs. Walter Nash. Several women were photographed with their brooms, including Mrs. Winston Harwood, Mrs. James Owens, Mrs. Leroy Dutt, Mrs. Dan Robertson, Mrs. Arden Booth, and Mrs. Howard Hurwitz.
