40 years ago: Paper bags with ‘vegetative’ contents found, turned over to police

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 22, 1971:

  • The Kansas House had passed , 74-32, a bill which would remove criminal penalties for the operation of bingo games by religious, educational, and fraternal organizations. Atty. Gen. Vern Miller said that even if the penalties were removed, the games would still be illegal under the state constitution’s prohibition of lotteries.
  • The coming weekend was the final one for an exhibit featuring a moon rock and related materials at the Kansas University Museum of Natural History. The chunk of lunar material had been visited by 15,031 people so far.
  • Two paper bags containing “vegetation believed to be marijuana” had been found and turned in to police. One bag had been found under an abandoned washing machine in an alley in the 1300 block of New Hampshire, while the other had been found under a log in the 2400 block of Atchison.
