25 years ago: West campus development deferred
During a recent meeting, planning commissioners voted to defer requests for the controversial Campus West No. 1 development along Yankee Tank Creek in western Lawrence. The development plan came with an in-house recommendation to remove the FP (flood plain) zoning designation. Commission members were also asking whether the city could prevent some flooding problems by maintaining streams running through Lawrence. Many residents charged that flooding problems often began when creek beds became blocked.
The cities of Lawrence, Manhattan, Hutchinson and Olathe were being encouraged to create their own community programs encouraging people to buckle up their seat belts. Kansas had not yet approved a mandatory seat-belt law, but there was a law stating that children under 4 years of age were to be properly restrained in a safety seat while in the front seat of a car.
