‘Home Rules’ loads more stuff on family with oversized house

HGTV gets into the self-help business with “Home Rules” (8 p.m., HGTV).

Fran Harris, a former professional basketball player and “life coach,” will counsel a new family every episode to face the bad habits making a mess of their finances and family life. And if they agree to tackle their problems, they get a home makeover.

Her first subjects are a couple in an oversized home in Connecticut and blow through their income of nearly $100,000 and have nothing but debt. For all of the trappings of an upper middle class McMansion lifestyle, they live like squatters. Bedrooms and bathrooms remain unfinished and uninsulated, and three of their four kids sleep on the floor. But their eldest daughter lives like a princess, refusing to do chores and attending a private high school and special skating lessons.

In many ways, this is like “Clean House” but with much higher stakes. In the end, the parents don’t really bite the bullet, or bite it very hard. But they get a complete home makeover anyway!

I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who will find this annoying and even disturbing. Giving a family that has out-of-control consumerism and a sense of entitlement even more stuff is a little like holding a cocktail party during an episode of “Intervention.”

• ABC recently decimated its news department. Now the network seems intent on humiliating the surviving employees. Tonight the network will air “Inside the Bachelor: The Stories Behind the Rose” (7 p.m., ABC), a two-hour retrospective of the past season. What’s that got to do with news? Nothing, except that it’s touted as a “20/20” special from the beleaguered news department.
