25 years ago: Planning commission opposes communications tower

Led by a marked increase in the number of freshmen, Kansas University’s official fall headcount showed an increase of 124 students over the total for the previous fall. There were 26,744 enrolled for the fall at KU’s Lawrence and off-campus locations and the KU Medical Center. The total for 1983 had been 26,620. The Lawrence campus total was 22,688.

The city-county planning commission sent a second message opposing a controversial communications tower of 150 feet. United Telespectrum Inc., Shawnee Mission was proposing the tower just outside the Lawrence city limits at the southwest corner of Peterson Road and Monterey Way. Neighbors said property values and “aesthetic values” were at stake.
