100 years ago: Flood control deemed too expensive

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 22, 1909: “Wakarusa farmers who were considering flood control in the drainage district have decided it is too expensive. They will clean out the stream but no drainage district project is due for now. … Free railroad tickets to Lawrence for outsiders wishing to trade and shop here became a reality today when the Merchants Association put the rebate system into action. Visitors can turn in their railroad tickets and get rebates and the plan applies to anywhere in town. … Chancellor Frank Strong of the university has been asked to take a prominent part in the ceremonies attendant upon the inauguration of J. Frances Lowell as president of Harvard University. It is considered an outstanding honor and good for the university reputation.”
