25 years ago: Auto workers go on strike

Negotiators for General Motors and the United Auto Workers bargained on a national contract as pickets marched outside 13 plants struck over local issues. Some 59,000 workers for the world’s largest manufacturer were involved.

Miss Utah, Sharlene Wells, was crowned Miss America. Miss Kansas did not finish among the top five candidates. Miss Utah took over after a year of turmoil over the Vanessa Williams Penthouse photos had unseated her.

The East Lawrence Homestead project produced homes for those taking part in a lottery and Mark Roeyer and Ellen Paulsen were the first to build and move into their dwellings. Both were delighted with “the luck of the draw.”

Britain’s Princess Diana gave birth to a 6-pound, 14-ounce boy, her second child and the newest heir to the Brisith crown. The brother was Prince William, age 2.

Emergency services were shown to the public at an open house at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Emphasis was on the emergency room and its facilities.
