Senate leaders expect coal vote next week

Senate leaders expect a vote next week on a bill allowing two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas.

They also said Friday they expect the measure to go to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who vetoed three similar bills last year.

The final version of the legislation was drafted by House and Senate negotiators. The Senate will take an up-or-down vote first, then the House.

The measure would overturn an October 2007 decision by Sebelius’ administration to deny an air-quality permit to Sunflower Electric Power Corp. The Hays-based company wants to build the two power plants in Finney County.

The bill also limits the authority of the Kansas secretary of health and environment to regulate greenhouse gases.
