Jury finds 19-year-old guilty of murdering former Lawrence resident
A Missouri jury has convicted a 19-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man for the 2007 murder of a former Lawrence resident.
Jurors in Jackson County (Mo.) District Court on Friday found Lamar D. Quarles guilty of first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. Quarles faced the charges for the shooting death of Derek A. Orchard, 37, of Overland Park.
Orchard is a 1988 Lawrence High graduate. He worked in marketing at the time in the Kansas City area. Prosecutors have said Quarles and Antonio E. Smith, 19, took Orchard to a southern Kansas City park in May 2007 where they robbed him, shot him and stole Orchard’s car.
A jury convicted Smith in February of second-degree murder, robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. He was sentenced to concurrently serve four 25-year prison terms.
Jurors have recommended that Quarles be sentenced to life without parole for the first-degree murder conviction, according to Mary Jacobi, a courts spokeswoman.
Jurors are still considering a sentence for the other three charges, she said. A judge will make the formal sentencing decision later.
