Lawrence Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the Lawrence First United Methodist Church, completed classroom training for the Painting Merit Badge. The Scouts learned the differences between oil-based and water-based paints. They learned where to use enamel paint, wood stain, flat paint and varnish. They also learned how to use patching material, top coats, primers and caulking. The Scouts discovered the proper way to use, clean, maintain and store painting equipment. Ladder safety and environmental responsibilities in paint removal, paint application and disposal of old paint was emphasized. The troop prepared and painted storage sheds at the First United Methodist Church on Oct. 4. Scouts participating and earning the Painting Merit Badge were Caelan Golledge, Dakota Zinn, Thomas Peterson, Elias Schneck, Darren Rawlings and Drew Sheppard. Adults participating were Bruce Wagner, Chris Golledge and Rod Zinn.

¢Gavin Spence, of Lawrence Boy Scout Troop 52, earned merit badges in Art, Aviation, Bird Study, Camping, Insect Study, Mammal Study, Painting, Sculpture, Space Exploration and Weather. The troop, chartered to the Lawrence First United Methodist Church, held its Court of Honor on Sept. 30.
