KU soccer coach reprimanded

Kansas University soccer coach Mark Francis has been reprimanded by the Big 12 Conference and fined $2,500 by KU for his actions in last Friday’s match at Oklahoma State.

Francis was slapped for his unsportsmanlike behavior following the match that the No. 12-ranked Cowgirls won, 3-2, in overtime.

Apparently unhappy about a late call, Francis attempted to confront officials and overturned equipment in the bench area.

Kansas led 2-1 in the 89th minute, but was called for a handball in the box, giving OSU’s Annika Niemeier a penalty kick which she converted to forge a 2-2 tie. Then the Cowgirls scored just 2:03 into overtime.

“I take full responsibility and regret my actions following the game,” said Francis. “I apologize to those involved.”

The conference has also warned Francis that any future acts may result in a more significant penalty, including suspension.

Francis is the first KU coach to be reprimanded by the Big 12 since 2004 when football coach Mark Mangino was slapped for comments he made following a 27-23 loss to Texas. The league fined Mangino $5,000.
