Rain doesn’t stop parade

From left: St. Patrick's Day Parade participant Phil Ostronic hands out balloons Monday near Eighth and Massachusetts streets; Tom E. Frenchman II, a Delaware Indian, dresses as a traditional Native American clown; Mr. Bean, a boston terrier, trots along Massachusetts Street; Adrienne Pease, 12, Molly McCord, 11, and Adriana Gramly, 12, huddle under one umbrella while watching the parade.

There were no rainbows, but that did not stop Lawrence residents from looking for a pot of gold today.

Parade-watchers accepted the steady downpour as they participated in the revelry of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown.

“Would you look at this crowd?” said Jean Ann Pike, director of the Social Service League. “Is everyone having a good time?”

The roughly 116 parade entrants marked the highest number the parade has ever had, Parade Official Julie McCurdy said. She said the crowd was great, considering the weather. The parade wound from South Park to North Lawrence. Crowds glowed in green and played in the puddles.
