U.S. casualties for the past week in the Vietnam War were the second highest on record – 470 killed and 2,675 wounded.

Gov. Robert Docking’s highway program including badly needed improvements in the Lawrence area was sent to the floor of the Kansas House with strong recommendation for passage. Docking, who grew up in Lawrence and had been a banker here, had long felt the county was being shortchanged from the standpoint of highway projects. He had become a champion of the local region as the chief executive.
