Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 29, 1908: “Mayor Barker had some ribs jarred loose from his spine last night when he ran to separate two fighting dogs. He fell to the ground and could be seriously impaired for some time. One rib was torn loose from his backbone, we hear. : The legislature had adopted the W.R. Stubbs primary election plan and primaries will be held in August rather than in May. Stubbs is being promoted hard as a governor candidate. : The Lawrence Committee last night voted for a movement to bring factories and other employing industries here by the establishment of a big guaranty fund to help such institutions get on their feet. The size of the fund has not been agreed upon but there is talk of as much as $100,000 to be used in appropriate situations.”
