Members of Boy Scout Troop 65, Baldwin City, climbed Mount Antero and rafted on the Arkansas River during a weeklong stay at Packard High Adventure Base near Poncha Springs, Colo., in July.

The troop made its first camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs before traveling to Packard. Members enjoyed rock climbing and rappelling at Castle Rock.

For the hike to Mount Antero, the troop traveled by bus to the trailhead, elevation 8,970 feet, in the San Isabel National Forest. They hiked more than 6 miles up Brown’s Trail to Brown’s Lake, at 11,286 feet. Others traveled the additional 4 miles to the summit of Mount Antero, at 14,269 feet.

Scouts who summited were Brandon Baltzell, Alex Coffey, Keenan Coffey, Josh Hoffman, Jake Hogsett, Brian Jones, Kirsten Shuck and Colby Soden, along with adult leader Todd Coffey. They were led by Brian Keith Howard, Dodge City.

For the first day of whitewater rafting down the Arkansas River, troop members went through a 12-mile section that included Brown’s Canyon. For the second day, the troop went through a 14-mile section that included Bighorn Sheep Canyon. The rapids in both sections ranged from Class 2 to Class 4.

Two Scouts, Jake Hogsett and Kirsten Shuck, rafted the Royal Gorge section, with challenging Class 4 and 5 rapids.

Other Scouts on the trip were David Cook, Justin Cook, Logan Keener, Andrew Morgan and Sam Richards. Other adult leaders were Joe Bollig, Barbara Coffey, Robert Lawrenz and John Richards.
