Trial begins in Ottawa shooting

? The trial of a woman charged in a conspiracy to shoot and kill a Lawrence man started Tuesday in Franklin County District Court.

Kay F. Gaillard-Taylor, 49, of Lawrence, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy in the Dec. 19, 2006, shooting of Michael Miller. Miller was shot in the 1500 block of South Hickory in Ottawa.

Miller, who survived the shooting, was to testify the next day in an aggravated battery trial against Louis Galloway, 43, in Douglas County District Court.

Gaillard-Taylor was one of four people charged in the Miller case. Jeffrey A. Campbell, 29, of Lawrence, faces the same charges and is to have a pretrial conference Nov. 13. His trial date still has to be set.

In July, Lee Roy House, 44, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 36 months in prison for his role in the shooting. Lisa Winter, 38, of Lawrence, was sentenced in August to 66 months in prison after pleading no contest to attempted second-degree murder.

A total of three weeks has been set aside for Gaillard-Taylor’s trial. Jury selection Tuesday stretched into the afternoon.

Galloway was never charged in the Miller shooting case. In March, Galloway was sentenced in Douglas County to nearly 12 years in prison for breaking into Miller’s home and attacking him. That incident occurred in 2005.
