Community center opens in Eudora
The indoor portion of the $3.8 million Eudora Community and Aquatics Center will be open to the public today for limited use.
Eudora Parks and Recreation Director Tammy Hodges said the community room, kitchen and fitness center at the recreation center, 1628 Elm St., are now available.
Hodges said that the community room already has 10 bookings for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The facility will feature a community room and kitchen with a capacity for 150 people and can be rented with the kitchen for $150 per day, or for $125 a day without the kitchen.
The fitness center has three treadmills, three elliptical machines, one recumbent bike, one upright bike, six universal weight machines, dumbbells, weight benches and three plasma screen televisions.
Fitness center memberships for residents in the Eudora school district are $25 a month for a single adult, $20 a month for a single student, $15 a month for a single senior (55 and over) and $35 a month for a family. Nonresident prices are $10 more for single adults and families and $5 more for students and seniors.
The only part of the center that will not be ready today is the gymnasium, which will be ready the week of Thanksgiving, just in time for youth basketball teams to begin practicing in December.
Hodges said that Parks and Rec is planning men’s and women’s volleyball leagues, men’s basketball and tournaments for dodgeball and kickball.
“Since we have a building now, we’re trying to bring in new stuff,” she said.
The grand opening and ribbon-cutting festivities, which include Santa and drawings for prizes, will be at 4 p.m. Dec. 2.
Hours for the new recreation center are 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. After the first of year, more hours will be dedicated to Saturday and the center will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
