Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 16, 1907: “Several report they think the recent burglaries involve a woman they have seen peering into local windows. She is tall and dressed in dark clothing and there is considerable evidence she has been involved in local break-ins. : Officials are planning on adding 10 rooms to the university medical center hospital in Rosedale. : Officials plan to visit Kansas City to find out the chances of having the Orient Railroad come through Lawrence. Present plans call for a route four miles to the south. : On the eve of his 70th birthday, J.C. Horton, long a noted citizen here, died at his home. He had been in the wholesale drug business. He had not recovered from recent surgery. : Teamsters in and around town are being warned against allowing any more trash disposal on public property. The mayor says there will be harsh penalties because of the trouble caused by the trashing. : Confessions have been gained from people recently involved in local burglaries and trials are due to begin soon. We still have far too much crime here.”
