Missing scarlet macaws returned to Wichita zoo

? Two scarlet macaws were returned to the Sedgwick County Zoo after being missing for more than a month, the zoo reported Monday.

The birds, named Mac and Cheese, were reported missing from the zoo on April 27. They were returned Friday, thanks to the help of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The macaws, although a bit nervous, appear to be in good health.

Mac and Cheese have to spend at least 30 days in quarantine before returning to their home in the zoo jungle building.

Zoo officials think the birds were stolen during a late-night break-in.

The investigation regarding the macaws is ongoing. Capt. Michael Oliver, who is overseeing the investigation, said the sheriff’s office is still working off of the initial theft report.

Scarlet macaws can be sold as pets for as much as $2,000, but curator of birds Joe Barkowski said they require special care and attention.

Both birds are at least 20 years old, Barkowski said. Cheese has been at the zoo since 1986, and Mac arrived in 2002.
