Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 24, 1907: “The Pennsylvania Flyer, a fast train connecting Chicago and New York, was derailed near Johnstown, Pa., last night and all 54 passengers were hurt to some extent. Some are expected to die. A brake shoe on the engine fell under a drive wheel and the engine, partially derailed, plunged on until it fell, with three cars, into the river. : An elderly man was badly hurt here today when he fell and a milk truck horse stepped on his face, fracturing the right cheek and endangering the sight of the right eye. : A solution seems to have been found to a massive theft of hogs in the Ottawa area and prosecution seems to be under way. : Ottawa is talking now about building a YMCA with the $15,000 collected so far after failure to meet a $30,000 goal. Don’t do it. Hard work can still close the gap and provide a building that will be a source of pride for a fine organization.”
