Divers recover bodies of ice fishers

A dive team recovered two bodies today from a quarry near Kansas Highway 4 and Kansas Highway 16 junction one-half mile east on K-16 near Valley Falls.

The victims, who remain unidentified, apparently fell through the ice and drowned, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff Roy Dunnaway. He said the victims are both male and were ice fishing.

Divers from Shawnee Heights Fire District and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene at 7:30 a.m. The first body was discovered at 8:40, and one hour later the divers pulled the second body from the quarry.

The circumstances of the drownings, and how long they had been in the lake, are unknown at this time.
