Catch Heche before ‘Trees’ vanishes
After a Tuesday preview, the whimsical hourlong comedy “Men in Trees” (ABC) moves to its regular night. Viewers can catch two episodes tonight: the series pilot (7 p.m.), in which a published relationships expert finds herself marooned in Alaska, and the second episode (8 p.m.), in which she finds herself stalked by critters. I’m not in the prediction business, but I think if you want to catch this Anne Heche vehicle, you’d better do it quickly.
¢ Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day to short films. Many of these works are from directors who would go on to greater fame. Highlights include “La Jetee” (6:30 p.m., TCM), a 28-minute French film from 1962 about a time traveler’s attempt to prevent war. This story later was expanded into the 1995 film “12 Monkeys.”
Short movies by David Lynch (8 p.m.) and Martin Scorsese (8:45 p.m.) and Stanley Kubrick’s 1951 short “Day of the Fight” (9:30 p.m.) follow, as does “Boy and Bicycle” (11 p.m.), directed by Ridley Scott in 1965. The wee hours bring shorts from Francois Truffaut (1 a.m.), Roman Polanski (2 a.m.) and Alfred Hitchcock (4 a.m.).
¢ I can’t say I understand the appeal of the cartoon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (7 p.m., Nickelodeon), but it definitely has found a faithful audience.
In this epic tale, the world is in peril because the four forces of nature are out of balance. The Fire Nation has become dominant and destructive. Two impish kids discover the Avatar in some kind of frozen glacier and hope he can set things right. The dialogue and action bounce between typical teenage hijinks and deadly serious combat, with the world itself in the balance.
In other animated action, the “Teen Titans” get their own feature-length movie, “Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo” (7:30 p.m., Cartoon Network).
¢ The daughter of the Man in Black joins forces with one of the country’s most controversial singers in “Crossroads” (8 p.m., CMT), featuring Rosanne Cash and Steve Earle, who have performed and recorded together. Both have made their homes in New York after decades in Nashville. Cash’s most recent album, “Black Cadillac,” has earned some of the best reviews of her career. Earle’s recent works “Jerusalem” and “The Revolution Starts : Now” have showcased his outspoken political beliefs.
¢ “AIR: America’s Investigative Reports” (9 p.m., PBS) looks at how NPR reporter Daniel Zwerdling broke the story of the systematic mistreatment of immigrant detainees in prisons on U.S. soil.
Tonight’s other highlights
¢ Scheduled on “Dateline” (7 p.m., NBC): a shocking infomercial.
¢ Only five remain after tonight’s decision on “Celebrity Duets” (8 p.m., Fox).
¢ Members of the Lucian Alliance board the Odyssey on “Stargate SG-1” (8 p.m., Sci Fi).
¢ An officer’s killer may have political pull on “Law & Order” (9 p.m., NBC).
¢ Scheduled on “20/20” (9 p.m., ABC): the origins and powerful impact of popular stereotypes.
