Woodling: Fantasy football, city-style

Carson Palmer. Torry Holt. Donte Stallworth. Tony Gonzalez.

Those are some of the big-time NFL players on my fantasy-league team. Now if I just had a quality running back. Then again, maybe Detroit’s Kevin Jones will have a breakout season. I know. In my dreams.

Speaking of dreaming, it occurred to me that I could come up with a pretty darned good fantasy-league team by using Lawrence High and Free State High football players.

Here’s the way my team would look:

Quarterback – Ryan Murphy, Free State. This is a no-brainer. Murphy led the Sunflower League in total offense last season and staged a tour de force Friday night at Leavenworth when he figured in the Firebirds’ first five touchdowns. Murphy ran for two touchdowns, passed for two more and returned the opening kickoff 72 yards for a TD against the pitiable Pioneers.

Running Back – Tony Williams, Lawrence High. In his first career start, Williams rushed for 126 yards on 15 carries and scored twice against one of the Sunflower League’s best defenses. One of his TDs came on a spectacular 61-yard run.

Running Back – Brian Murphy, Free State. Ryan Murphy’s twin brother touched the ball only 12 times against the Pioneers, scoring once on a five-yard pass from his sibling. Still, Brian is just as dangerous a ball-carrier as Williams.

Running Back – Tyler Hunt, Lawrence High. Only a junior, Hunt has the size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) and speed to become a potential NCAA Division I-A prospect. Hunt averaged 7.0 yards on seven carries and scored once against Olathe North.

Wide Receiver – Nathan Padia, Lawrence High. This 6-3, 175-pound senior has the hands, the size and the leaping ability to give the ground-oriented Lions an added dimension. In six touches last Friday, Padia gained 193 yards (132 receiving, 61 rushing).

Wide Receiver/Running Back – Chucky Hunter, Free State. I’m going out on a limb here. Hunter is only a sophomore, but sometimes it’s wise to take a chance on a rookie based on his pedigree, and Hunter was a standout at Central Junior High last season.

Tight End – Christian Ballard, Free State. Like the Murphys, Ballard already has made an oral commitment to attend Kansas University. He caught two passes for 28 yards in the opener. Listed at 6-4 and 280 pounds, Ballard projects more as an offensive tackle than a tight end in college.

Kicker – Abby Vestal, Lawrence High. Best female kicker I’ve ever seen, and I saw Katie Hnida booting during warm-ups a few years ago when she was on Colorado University’s roster. Vestal drilled three extra points in the Lions’ opener. Her other attempt was blocked, but that wasn’t her fault. The center snap was low.

Defense – Lawrence High. Yeah, I know Free State shut out Leavenworth, and the Lions surrendered 34 points and didn’t force any turnovers against O-North, but if the Lions get all-league linebacker Nick DeBiasse (knee) back in two weeks, as expected, they could be dominant.
