Boom and bust

Moving today's Jayhawk football game is a losing proposition for local businesses and fans.

Welcome, Jayhawk football fans.

Oh, wait, Jayhawk football fans aren’t coming to Lawrence today. They’re on their way to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MISSOURI, to see the contest between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Oklahoma Sooners.

Moving this “home” game to Kansas City is a boom for the KU Athletic Department, but it’s a bust for local businesses. There will be no crowds in Lawrence before or after the game to visit local stores, restaurants or motels. Fans also are losers. Figuring in gasoline for the trip to Kansas City along with higher ticket prices and parking fees, it will cost fans an estimated $42 apiece more to see the Jayhawks at Arrowhead.

Lawrence Chamber of Commerce President Lavern Squier told the Journal-World this week that he would ask athletic officials to consult with his organization about moving games in the future so the chamber could “be in front of the curve next time.”

Good luck. Throwing local businesses and fans a curve seems to be of little concern to the money-focused KU athletic department.
