Officials identify man killed in tree accident

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday released the identity of a man killed Saturday in a tree-chopping incident.

He was Lonnie Hunter, 24, Topeka, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Kari Wempe.

Officers were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. It occurred about 10 a.m. on property in the 200 section of North 2190 Road, about 4 miles northwest of Lecompton.

Officers were trying to determine whether a tree or a branch struck Hunter, who was at the scene with another man. The death is being treated by investigators as an accident, Wempe said.
