Topeka man killed in accident while chopping wood

A 24-year-old Topeka man died in an accident after 10 a.m. Saturday morning when a branch or tree fell onto him in northwestern Douglas County.

The man and another person were chopping firewood on some property near the 200 block of N. 2190 Road, said Lt. Kari Wempe with the Douglas County Sheriff’s office.

Saturday evening, officers continued to investigate whether a tree or branch toppled and struck the man and killed him. They also were investigating whether the man might have owned the land or was there with a friend, Wempe said.

Wempe said she expected to have more information on the accident sometime Sunday.

Officers were also still trying to notify some of the man’s family members Saturday evening, so his name was not released.

Sheriff’s officers are treating the death as an accident, Wempe said.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Battalion Chief Rob Kort said the call came in at 10:10 a.m.
