Heavy rains hit Douglas County

Douglas County was getting steady showers this morning, already totaling up to between 2 and 4 inches by midmorning. More wet weather is expected throughout the day

“If you’re heading off to work, I don’t think you’ll need the sunglasses today. But grab the umbrella,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

At 8 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 64 degrees, with 6-mph east-southeast winds. Lawrence Municipal Airport, which is just northeast of the city, was reporting 2.62 inches of rain. And the 6News studio in downtown Lawrence had recorded 2.34 inches, Schack said. Moderate to heavy rains were holding down visibility to 2.5 miles on the highways, she said.

“You might want to turn your headlights on,” she said. “You might see some ponding on the roads.”

The National Weather Service reported that rain was coming down at a rate of about an inch per hour this morning. Douglas, Jefferson and Franklin counties were expected to get heavy rains through 9 a.m., the weather service reported.

Eventually, the showers will become scattered by the noon hour, Schack said. By late afternoon, the widespread showers should end, with only a few isolated areas getting rain, she said. Today’s high will climb to 78, with heavy clouds expected all day, she said.

Overnight, Lawrence’s temperature will dip down to 59 by early Thursday morning. But summer weather is moving in, Schack said.

“It looks like we go from wet today to warm tomorrow,” she said. Thursday’s high will reach 86, under partly cloudy skies.

Friday’s morning low will be 65, with Friday’s high climbing to 88 under partly cloudy skies. There’s a possibility of thunderstorms on Friday night through the weekend.
