Six charged in sheriff’s slaying

? Prosecutors on Monday charged a 23-year-old man with capital murder in the killing of Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels, who was shot to death last week while serving warrants.

Prosecutors also charged Scott Cheever with three counts of attempted capital murder, manufacture of methamphetamine, conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and criminal possession of a firearm. Five others also were charged Monday in connection with the case.

Samuels was shot Wednesday morning as he was serving a search warrant. He also was executing an arrest warrant for Cheever.

If convicted of capital murder, Cheever could face either the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Also charged Monday were Matt Denney, 23, Darrell Cooper, 43, Belinda Kaye Cooper, 36, and Billy Gene Nowell, 35. They each face a charge of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Prosecutors also charged Rhonda O’Brien, 43, with one count of aiding a felon and one count of obstructing official duty.

All six appeared Monday in Greenwood County District Court. Cheever is being held without bond, while the others are each held on $500,000 bond. All are still in custody, the prosecutor’s office said.
