Richard L. ‘Dick’ Hermes, Lawrence

A memorial gathering for Dr. Richard L. “Dick” Hermes, 89, Lawrence, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Dr. Hermes died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born May 4, 1915, in Bradford, Pa., the son of Peter J. and Maytha Horton Hermes.

Dr. Hermes received his Bachelor of Science degree and medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1939.

Dr. Hermes spent more than four years in the service during World War II, primarily in Europe in the U.S. Air Corps as a flight surgeon for the 36th Fighter Group. He was discharged Dec. 31, 1945, as a lieutenant colonel. He then became a resident at the Chicago Lying-In Hospital.

He moved to Lawrence in September 1950, where he entered practice with Dr. Raymond Schwegler. Hermes then joined in practice with Dr. Howard Wilcox. With Drs. William Buck and Garry Owen, they formed Gynecology & Obstetrics P.A. at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He received numerous accolades and was a member of many medical organizations, including the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hermes also served short terms on the boards of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross, Douglas County Senior Citizens and the Valleyview Care Home. He participated in Meals on Wheels, the Boy Scouts, the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Cosmopolitan Club and the Flying Physicians Club.

He married Marjory Brown. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Peter Hermes, Fort Myers, Fla.; five daughters, Penelope Amyx, Topeka, Deborah Cotton, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Patricia Freeman, Costa Mesa, Calif., Pamela Terrones, Tarzana, Calif., and Kristin Hermes-Pruitt, Houston; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care of Douglas County, Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. or Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
