Campaign finance bill wins Senate approval

? A bill designed to increase disclosure of campaign contributions in the days leading up to an election won Senate approval Wednesday.

The measure, approved and sent to the House on a 29-11 vote, would attack what critics see as a loophole in Kansas reporting laws.

Currently, the reports filed by candidates before an election do not cover the last 11 days of the campaign, and contributions made during that period aren’t disclosed for several months.

Under the bill, in those final days, a campaign would have to disclose any contribution of $300 or more to the state Governmental Ethics Commission within 48 hours. Federal law contains a similar provision.

The ethics commission had suggested 24-hour reporting, but senators said that could be too cumbersome.
