O-North claims softball sweep at LHS
Showtime, it was not.
After 11 innings in the Lawrence High softball team’s marathon of a game against Olathe North on Thursday, starting pitcher Whitney Juneau, who had gone the distance to that point, had to leave for a commitment to the school’s “Showtime “song and dance spectacle.
In the 12th inning, the Chesty Lions dropped the decision, 2-1.
Following the grueling marathon came a sprint, which turned into a 9-5 defeat, as LHS was swept by the Eagles.
“Well, you play 12 innings and you don’t come away with a win, you know that’s hard to get back up for a second game, but we’ve got to be able to do it,” LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill said. “We did a really terrible job of coming out that second game ready to play ball.”
In the opener, LHS led 1-0 in the fourth inning after Rachel Amyx turned in the game’s only extra-base hit in the form of an RBI double to score Amy Bullerman.
Olathe North tied the game in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t put another run across against Juneau, who got stronger as the game went on. So, too did O-North pitcher Samantha Evans, though.
But when Lisa Pearse, who pitched game two, was forced to the rubber early for the top of the 12th, the Eagles were able to manufacture a run off of a bloop single into center field by Stefanie McAfee.
Lawrence threatened in the bottom half when Drew Huff lined a two-out single through the infield, but Lauren Kelly followed it by lining a shot off of Evans’ leg, which bounced to shortstop Kelli Vandewell who then ended the game.
“I think everyone was really tired,” Kelly said of the team’s morale after game one. “We were feeling down about the first game, and then how Whitney and them left, I think the enthusiasm died a little more there.”
North quickly lit up the scoreboard in the second game.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Lions closed the gap half-way with a three-run third inning, paced by RBI singles from Sam Hays and Alicia Bowlin as well as an RBI double from Kelly. They finally had gotten the best of Evans, who, aside from throwing all 12 innings in game one, threw the first four in the back end.
But LHS let it get away for good in the next inning.
With two outs and Vandewell on second base for North, Kelsey Allen hit a grounder to Huff at shortstop. Instead of throwing to first, she attempted to tag Vandewell, who safely scurried back to second. After that, North proceeded to score three more runs and put the game away for good.
“I really felt like we were playing pitching that we should have been hitting,” Stogsdill said, “and so I expected us to come out and get some hits. But we got down and kept scratching and clawing to get back in it, but we can’t play a game like that, and I hope that they learned that today.”
