L.A.’s win streak hits seven

Bradley's home run in 10th dooms Brewers

? Milton Bradley’s hot hitting extended the Los Angeles Dodgers’ winning streak to seven and made up for an earlier misplay in the outfield.

Bradley hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning Tuesday, and the Dodgers rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-6.

Bradley has a seven-game hitting streak, hitting .444 (12-for-27). He has at least one hit in each of his 12 starts this year, and his only hitless game came as a pinch hitter April 10 at Arizona.

“If you look at what we’ve been able to do in one-run games over the past couple of years, it’s indicative of a ballclub that understands what it has to do to win games like that,” Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said.

It was the biggest comeback for Los Angeles since the Dodgers overcame a six-run deficit Aug. 11, 1999, at Montreal.

Milwaukee, which has lost five straight, scored six runs in the fourth inning after Dodgers starter Elmer Dessens left because of muscle spasms in the back of his right shoulder. Tracy said Dessens was day to day and it was too early to tell whether Dessens would be able to take his next turn in the rotation.

Pinch-hitter Jason Grabowski began the comeback with a leadoff homer in the sixth. Los Angeles closed to 6-5 in the seventh against Jorge De La Rosa on pinch-hitter Jason Phillips’ RBI single, pinch-hitter Olmedo Saenz’s RBI double and Cesar Izturis’ two-run double.

Ricky Ledee singled off Mike Adams with one out in the ninth, advanced on Damian Miller’s two-out passed ball and, after Saenz walked, scored on Izturis’ single.

“We got into the ninth inning with a one-run lead and I let the team down,” Adams said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Los Angeles' Milton Bradley celebrates his game-winning home run against Milwaukee. Bradley belted a two-run shot in the 10th, and the Dodgers defeated the Brewers, 8-6, Tuesday in Milwaukee.

J.D. Drew walked against Tommy Phelps (0-1) leading off the 10th, and Bradley homered one out later on a 1-2 pitch, his fifth of the year.

“It’s a tremendous team win,” said Tracy, who used all of his position players and five relievers. “When you look at my lineup card and see the number of players involved, I think that would constitute a total team effort.”

Giovanni Carrara (2-0) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, and Yhency Brazoban finished for his third save.

Dessens walked Carlos Lee leading off the fourth and allowed a single to Miller. After Jeff Cirillo flied out to center, Dessens came out of the game.

Buddy Carlyle relieved, and Chris Magruder homered on a 2-2 pitch for a 3-0 lead. The reserve outfielder was starting for the third time in four games because Geoff Jenkins has flulike symptoms.

Milwaukee loaded the bases when J.J. Hardy walked, pitcher Gary Glover was hit by a pitch and Brady Clark walked. After Junior Spivey took a called third strike, Lyle Overbay hit a fly to center that was misplayed by Bradley into a three-run double as the ball rolled to the wall.

Mets 16, Phillies 4

Philadelphia — David Wright hit a grand slam, Jose Reyes and Victor Diaz each homered twice, and the New York Mets hit a team-record seven against the Phillies. Mike Piazza and Doug Mientkiewicz also homered, and Wright and Diaz each went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for the Mets, who stopped a two-game skid. The seven homers were only five shy of New York’s season total coming in. Victor Zambrano (1-1) was the beneficiary.

Astros 5, Braves 3

Houston — Willy Taveras hit his first major-league home run, and Brandon Backe gained his first victory of the season, leading Houston. The Astros, coming off a 1-0, 12-inning loss to the Braves, ended a 15-inning scoreless streak when Brad Ausmus hit an RBI single in the second.

Marlins 6, Nationals 3

Washington — Brian Moehler earned his first major-league victory in 21/2 years, and Carlos Delgado hit Florida’s first homer in six games. In sweeping a two-game set at RFK Stadium, the Marlins joined the Nationals atop the NL East at 8-6. Moehler (1-0), who spent last season in Double-A ball, allowed one run on six hits in five innings.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 1

Pittsburgh — Matt Morris breezed in his first start since offseason shoulder surgery, limiting the Pirates to one run and four hits in six innings. Jim Edmonds homered for the second consecutive night, and Larry Walker and Albert Pujols each drove in two runs as the Cardinals outscored the Pirates 18-2 in the two-game series.

Padres 5, Giants 2

San Diego — Brian Lawrence threw eight strong innings, and Geoff Blum and Ramon Hernandez each drove in two runs to give San Diego a victory over San Francisco. The Padres scored 12 runs in the two-game sweep after scoring just three during an embarrassing three-game weekend sweep at Dodger Stadium. Lawrence (1-2) retired his last nine batters and held the Giants to two runs and six hits.

Cubs 7, Reds 1

Cincinnati — Corey Patterson, Michael Barrett and Derrek Lee hit solo homers to help Chicago secure a split of the two-game series. Mark Prior (2-0) has won both of his starts since recovering from a sore elbow. The right-hander gave up four hits and an unearned run in seven innings, striking out six. Brandon Claussen (0-1) lasted five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs.

Rockies 8, Diamondbacks 1

Denver — The beat-up Colorado bullpen held up, getting the final four outs to preserve a nice start by Jeff Francis and a victory over Arizona.
