Canvass confirms election results
Commissioners approve 1,997 provisional ballots
The counting of provisional ballots didn’t change the outcome of any election races in Douglas County.

Douglas County election officials and commissioners sit down Monday morning to canvass provisional ballots from Tuesday's election. The canvassing did not change the outcome of any county races.
Acting as official canvassers for the Nov. 2 election, county commissioners Monday approved the inclusion of provisional ballots and made official election results provided by the Douglas County Clerk’s Office.
Including provisional ballots, 50,367 people voted in the election — about 77 percent of the county’s 65,181 registered voters.
“We had close to 80 percent of the registered voters in Douglas County casting their ballots, and that’s remarkable,” Commissioner Bob Johnson said. “There are undoubtedly some people who are not very pleased with the turnout of the election. But everyone in our county has to be very pleased with the fact that so many people chose to go to the polls and vote and participate in the process. That makes you feel really good.”
Last week, 2,897 people cast provisional ballots in Douglas County. Commissioners approved 1,997 of those ballots.
Few people attended the canvass at the courthouse. Among them were Reform Party candidate Jim Mullins and Democratic candidate Marci Francisco, both candidates for the 2nd District Kansas Senate seat.
Francisco beat out Republican incumbent Mark Buhler and Mullins with 16,478 votes, or 51 percent. Buhler received 13,902 votes, 43 percent. Mullins received 2,035 votes, 6 percent.
