Mildred R. Barnes

? Graveside services for Mildred R. Barnes, 90, Lawrence, will at 2 p.m. Friday in Mount Olive Cemetery, Pittsburg.

Mrs. Barnes died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at her home.

She was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Siloam Springs, Ark., the daughter of William and Ella Smith Pilkenton. She moved to Pittsburg by covered wagon at age 7. She attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1933. She moved to Lawrence in 1951. She and her husband purchased The Wells Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks in 1963. She returned to Pittsburg in 1980 before moving to New York to live with her daughter for five years. She returned to Lawrence shortly before her death.

Mrs. Barnes worked at Kansas Color Press in Lawrence.

She was a member of First Christian Church and 21st Century Class. She served as Y.L.C.A. president from 1989 to 1990, and volunteered as an elementary reading class grandma aid.

She married Guy L. Barnes on Oct. 14, 1933, in Girard. He died Feb. 14, 1980.

Survivors include a son, Ronald G. Barnes, Lawrence; a daughter, Barbara Babboni, Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel in Pittsburg, where the family will receive them from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday.
