Severe weather expected tonight

Get ready for a stormy meteorological show tonight, featuring high winds, heavy rains, lightning and even some hail.

“We’re under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 o’clock this evening,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

The watch area includes Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, he said.

“With the set up that we have, hail and high winds would be the biggest threat,” Sayers said. However, the storms will be isolated, so not all areas will be affected, he said.

The afternoon temperature turned out a little warmer and muggier than expected — it was 91 at 3:45 p.m., with a heat index of 101 at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

Overnight, the temperature was expected to drop to 69 by Tuesday morning, Sayers said.

On Tuesday, the clouds will decrease, with the high reaching 89.

On Wednesday, rain looks likely, with cooler conditions, he said.

Wednesday morning’s low will be 71, with the high topping out at 77 during the day, with mostly cloudy conditions and thunderstorms through the day, he said.
