Wendell G. Mohling
Lenexa ? Services for Wendell G. Mohling, 61, Vienna, Va., will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
Mr. Mohling died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, from complications from a stroke, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
He was born June 30, 1943, in Fairbury, Neb., the son of Edwin and Emilie Mohling. He received a degree in science education from Peru State College in Peru, Neb; a master’s degree in natural science from the University of Oklahoma in 1968; and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Kansas University in 1993.
He was a biology and general science teacher in Scribner, Neb., and at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, where he was the environmental education curriculum specialist and director of the outdoor laboratory and greenhouse program.
Mr. Mohling was president of the National Science Teachers Assn. from 1992 to 1993 and had held numerous other positions in the organization. He was selected as a designee in the NASA Teacher in Space Program in 1985 and was involved with many other NASA programs.
He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1983 and the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Kansas from the National Association of Biology Teachers in 1977. He also received the Conservation Educator of the Year Award from the Kansas Wildlife Federation in 1980 and the Outstanding Conservation Teacher Award from the Burroughs Audubon Society in 1982.
He was a member of the National Committee on Science Education Standards and Assessment; the National Association of Biology Teachers; the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science, where he also served as president; the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers; the Greater Kansas City Science Teachers Assn.; and the Air Force Association Aerospace Foundation.
He married Carol K. Hohbien on June 20, 1965, in Jansen, Neb. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Maria Alatna Mohling, Lawrence; a brother, Lynn, Glenwood, Iowa; and three sisters, Letha Morfeld, LaCrosse, Wis., Celesta Armknecht and LaRue Cole, both of Lincoln, Neb.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Amos Family Chapel in Shawnee.
