City breaks 107-year-old low temperature record

It’s been more than a century since Lawrence had such a cold morning on Aug. 16 — the temperature dropped to 53 this morning, breaking the old low temperature record of 54, set for this date back in 1897.

That’s the fifth time this month that the city has either tied or broken a low morning temperature record, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Today’s temperature will climb to a high of 82 by 4 p.m., which is about eight degrees below average, Schack said.

“It’s just a little bit warmer than yesterday,” she said.

Today’s skies will be partly cloudy, with southerly winds, 5-15 mph. The winds will bring in some humidity from the south.

“It will start to feel more sticky,” she said.

During the afternoon, storms will start off mostly to the north and move east of the region. But there are chances of thunderstorms later in the evening for the Lawrence area, she said. The National Weather Service predicted the chance for thunderstorms is 20 percent today and 20 percent tonight.

Overnight, the low will drop to 66. The chance for thunderstorms continues through Tuesday morning, Schack said.

Tuesday’s high will reach 85, with a chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The chance for overnight showers and thunderstorms continues through Thursday, Schack said.

“Friday and Saturday we break free for some partly cloudy skies, with temperatures in the low 80s,” Schack said.
