What to wear

Bright colors, comfort key to student wardrobe

The collegiate uniform of pajama pants and T-shirts may be acceptable for class, but when Kansas University students hit Lawrence’s nightlife scene, comfort and price shouldn’t be the only factors on their minds.

They might want to consider brighter colors as well.

Lime green, hot pink, orange and blue are just a few of the colors making a comeback in Lawrence stores.

“I like the bright colors for summer,” said Lauren LaBarba, Dallas senior. “They are not as boring.”

Student style usually runs toward comfortable attire. But this fall, stores such as Britches Clothing Co., 843 Mass., Kieu’s, 738 Mass., and Abercrombie & Fitch, 647 Mass., are offering more of these bright colors and other bold styles.

Abigail Symonds, Olathe senior and sales associate at Britches, said her store was selling a lot of bright colors and feminine, flowery shirts that reveal more. She also said that the popularity of short skirts and different colored pumps grew this season.

“There tends to be a cycle of styles,” Symonds said. “It seems like past decades’ styles, such as the ’80s, are being revised for today.”

Men’s clothing is becoming brighter as well. While guys might be reluctant to try the new styles, some are willing to give them a shot.

“I mostly wear black and baby blue, but I did have a salmon sweater once,” said Todd Maltbie, Wichita senior.

Others are content to stick with what feels good.

“I look for comfort first because if you don’t feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, then you won’t feel comfortable going out,” said Kyle McGrath, Wichita senior.

Comfort also is important to women, even with dwindling skirt lengths and revealing tops.

“If you feel comfortable, then you have more confidence so you’ll look and feel better in your clothes,” said Austin Ice, Lawrence freshman.

KU students must always be aware of their finances. Some students shop with their wallet in mind first and fashion magazines second.

“I go for the sales rack first and see if I find anything because I’m poor. Then I’ll look at the rest of the store, and I try to find things that will go with what I already have,” said Laura Lavoie, Springfield, Mo., senior.
