At least 11 people killed on Kansas highways

At least 11 people died on state highways during the long Labor Day weekend, including four Missouri children killed after their minivan was pushed off the Kansas Turnpike by rushing flood waters Saturday night.

Two other people, including the children’s mother, Melissa Rogers, of Liberty, Mo., and Al Larsen, of Fort Worth, Texas, still are missing and are presumed to be dead.

Kansas Highway Patrol Capt. Mark Conboy identified the Rogers children as Makenah Rogers, 8; Zachery Rogers, 5; Nicolas Rogers, 3; and Alenah Rogers, 1.

Two people were killed overnight in a one-vehicle crash in Butler County. Sheriff Stan Cox identified the victims as Christopher Poe, 21, of El Dorado, and Kelcee Nicole Lowry, 20, of Plainville.

Cox says the other two people in the sports utility vehicle were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that two Marquette teenagers were killed Friday night in a side-impact accident in Lindsborg.

Jeff Hopp, 16, and Michael Graham, 15, were killed after the vehicle they were in collided with a pickup, the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office said. The sheriff’s office said it was investigating the cause of the crash.

Also Friday, three people died in a head-on collision on U.S. 56 east of Larned.

The patrol said the accident happened at 9:15 p.m. when a westbound car driven by Jeffrey Garcia, 22, of Larned, crossed the center line and hit a car driven by Jerome Dixon, 22, of Meade.

The crash killed both drivers and Charles Kinsinger, 20, of Liberal, who was a passenger in Dixon’s car.

Last year, seven people were killed in traffic accidents from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight on Labor Day.
