Bus route beef

To the editor:

The Jayhawk Express is the new, free bus route rumbling around the KU campus. KU funded the Jayhawk Express by eliminating the East Lawrence bus route, which served students living southeast of campus around Haskell Avenue. Many nontraditional students live in this area, including minorities and those with children.

I feel the elimination of the East Lawrence route to fund the Jayhawk Express was a poor choice. Whether or not the Jayhawk Express is in demand, “and it is frequently empty,” is irrelevant. KU’s most disadvantaged students had their bus route taken away from them without being given an ample and well-publicized opportunity to take a stand against this decision.

KU should seriously reconsider this decision. KU can either choose to support its nontraditional students and reinstate the East Lawrence route, or it can continue to eliminate East Lawrence students from its service. Nontraditional and minority students should not be the ones paying for the Jayhawk Express, and they are.
