Suspect continues to elude police

Search for parole violator comes up empty at Lawrence Memorial Hospital

A 31-year-old Nebraska man wanted on a federal warrant for a parole violation eluded authorities for a second day Wednesday.

Lawrence Police resumed their search for Paul Richard Caswell, the man who led them on a chase Tuesday afternoon across the Lawrence Country Club golf course, then escaped after hiding in an industrial area of northwest Lawrence.

After receiving a tip that a man matching Caswell’s description was spotted Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, officers blocked every entrance to the hospital and searched the entire building. The wanted man was not located.

Caswell and three other people from Lincoln, Neb., are under investigation for possibly manufacturing methamphetamine, forging stolen checks, and making counterfeit U.S. currency, police said.

Police got involved in the case about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, when they were called to SuperTarget, 3201 Iowa. There, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said, a man was in custody for allegedly attempting to steal several boxes of cold and allergy medication, which is sometimes used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

The suspect, a 28-year-old man from Lincoln, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on theft and drug charges.

That investigation led police to a room at the Ramada Inn, 2222 W. Sixth St., where the shoplifting suspect and three other people had been staying. Caswell and two women fled police as officers tried to serve a search warrant Tuesday at the hotel, authorities said.

Police found the two women Tuesday in the 500 block of Bently Drive, where Caswell abandoned the car. Police arrested one of the women, a 32-year-old from Lincoln, on various drug charges. She was released on bond about 11 p.m. Tuesday. The second woman was not arrested.

Back at the motel, police continued their investigation.

“Officers recovered evidence at the Ramada Inn consistent with the manufacture of counterfeit currency,” Pattrick said.

Court records show Caswell pleaded guilty Nov. 14 in the U.S. District Court of Nebraska to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 29.
